Data Remains A Universal Currency

Our report indicates that data skills are a top priority across all Malaysian employers regardless of size and industry – nearly 50% of our respondents’ ranked skills like analytics and data science as their highest upskilling priority. 

Cybersecurity skills were the next most in-demand across all organisations. Additionally, larger organisations tended to prioritise skills in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and 5G while smaller companies tended to emphasise more established skills like digital marketing more.

‘How’ Matters As Much As ‘What’

When it comes to how learning is delivered, our research indicates that there is a gap between the approach of many Malaysian employers and best practices. 

Furthermore, many HR practitioners cited a lack of resources as the main reason why they struggle building skills at scale. However, >50% of respondents said instructor-led learning was their preferred training delivery mode vs alternatives like hybrid learning that combines the effectiveness of instructor-led learning with the efficiency of online learning.

Looking At Job Titles ≠ Prioritisation

Majority of HR respondents said that they want to prioritise learning investments based on potential business impact, i.e., prioritising proficiencies that are most critical to their organisation.

However, in practice, they often end up relying on job titles when deciding who to invest in. As an example, over two thirds of respondents’ training budgets for cloud skills were allocated to managers alone even though many more non-managers require cloud skills.
